Looking for the top recommended weight loss supplements on the market today?
So you’ve decided to take your weight loss program to the next level by adding over the counter diet pills into the mix.
Now that you’ve made the decision to get serious, where do you start?
But with every supplement manufacturer coming up with a new and improved version of the common weight loss pill what seems like every month, this can be difficult.
So to make things simple for you if you’re just starting out, here are the three main types of weight loss pills and how each can benefit you.
1. Fat Burners
Also referred to as metabolism boosters and metabolic enhancers, fat burners are the most popular type of diet pills that are available over the counter, hands down.
This is because of their ability to help in the process of boosting the metabolism for fat oxidation and quicker, more effective fat loss.
The only downside is that everyone wants to be able to simply pop a pill and miraculously burn off the unwanted pounds of fat from their belly without any extra effort on their part.
Unfortunately it’s not that easy.
But combining fat burning supplements with a good diet and exercise program can be an effective way in helping you get rid of stubborn belly fat.
How Fat Burners Work
As the name suggests, fat burner supplements work by helping to increase the metabolism and enhance the body’s ability to oxidize, or “burn up” fat for fuel.
Research has shown that people who are overweight generally have an extremely low rate of converting food eaten into energy.
In other words, they have a very slow metabolism.
When a person’s metabolism is slow, food easily gets converted into fat and stored in the body thus contributing to an increase in visceral fat and weight gain.
Fat burners work to counteract this by helping to increase the basal metabolic rate (BMR) of the body.
Basal Metabolic Rate is the minimum amount of energy needed by the body to maintain its normal functions when at rest.
Even as you rest or sleep, breathing, heart rate and other such functions need to be maintained or else you would not be able to sustain life.
By Increasing your BMR, fat burners can help you make your metabolism efficient at any time of the day or night.
Fat burning supplements are also useful for your workouts too.
By enhancing your metabolic rate at the time you are exercising, more energy can be burned than normal which can results in a greater amount of fat loss.
Fat burning pills are also great as a pre-workout supplement because of the energy stimulating and focus enhancing properties they contain.
2. Appetite Suppressants
The next most popular type of diet pill is an appetite suppressant.
As the name suggests, popular over the counter supplements like Hoodia Gordonii help to quell your appetite and lessen the intensity of your cravings for things like sugary sweets and deep fried foods.
When you have less cravings you are more likely to eat less food throughout the day.
And the theory behind this is that if you are taking in less food then you are taking in less of the types of calories that make you fat, such as refined carbohydrates and “bad” fats.
And with time you should start to lose weight naturally.
Although you can purchase an appetite suppressant supplement on its own, most fat burners and metabolism boosting pills already contain an appetite suppressant in them.
This gives the pills a “one-two punch”, hitting fat loss from multiple angles for the best possible results.
3. Fat Blockers
Fat blockers aren’t as popular as fat burners and appetite suppressants, but they are another good choice when it comes to weight loss supplements.
Fat blockers, or lipase inhibitors as they are sometimes referred to, work by blocking around 25% of the dietary fat that you consume from being absorbed into your system.
This is done through a compound called Orlistat, which is able to bind, or “block”, fats as soon as they enter your body.
By binding the fat you ingest, this element makes it virtually indigestible and thus it is not absorbed by your body.
The fat contained in the food you eat therefore passes as waste from your body.
One of the most popular fat blocking supplements on the market is Alli, which is available over the counter and contains 60mg of Orlistat.
Xenical, on the other hand, is the full strength version containing 120mg or Orlistat and can only be obtained with a prescription from your doctor.
Fat blockers have both advantages and disadvantages as well.
One advantage is that they allow you to eat all the types of food that you like and thus your diet does not have to change much.
But on the other hand, blocking fat means that your body does not absorb is and a couple of things happen.
First off, as much as dietary fat are demonized in our society today, they are an essential part of the human diet. In fact, fats help in the absorption of fat soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K.
Second, the side effects that you may experience from a fat blocking supplement like Alli may not be worth the small amount of progress that you may make from taking them.
We’ll leave it to WebMD to give you the lowdown on side effects:
“Changes in your bowel function often occur because of the unabsorbed fat. Fatty/oily stool, oily spotting, intestinal gas with discharge, a feeling of needing to have a bowel movement right away, increased number of bowel movements, or poor bowel control may occur. These side effects may get worse if you eat more fat than you should.” [source: WebMD.com]
